- Abstract:
- This spatial data summarizes ten separate datasets measuring the degree of naturalness surrounding each one hectare cell within the study area (The Nature Conservancy's Rocky Mountain Conservation Region). Each of the ten source datasets measured the amount of non-natural area within a moving window centered on the grid cell. The diameter of the window ranged from 100 - 1000m in 100m increments . These data provide an index of the degree of human impact across the region as measured at various scales. Impacts occuring at several scales (thus having a greater effect on the landscape integrity) have lower values than those occuring primarily at one or few scales.

- Raster data from NLCD and ReGap were merged and reclassified to produce a continuous, binary (natural/unnatural) grid coverage at 1 hectare resolution as follows.
1. ReGap reclassed to 0 = developed, 1 = undeveloped, 9999 = water and background. Generalize to 100m cell size. 2. Streetmap USA road data convert to 100m cell raster (road_ha) and reclassed to: 0 = no road, 10 = road 3. sw_road_ha = SWRegap + road_ha reclassed to: 0 = developed, 1 = natural, 9999 = water, background 4. NLCD 2001 Imperviousness reclass to (north_ha): 0 = 1, 1-100 = 0 and generalized to 100m cell 5. north_road_ha = north + road_ha reclassed to: 0 = developed, 1 = natural 6. lake_ha = ESRI hydro_ply (select lakes and reservoirs) converted to 100m cell raster and reclass to: 10 = no lake, 9999 = lake 7. Merge sw_road_ha and north_road_ha (rm_road_ha) 8. rm_nat = rm_road_ha + lake_ha reclassed to: 0 = developed, 1 = natural, 9999 = water, backgroud

- A 1 hectare resolution grid with values (1=natural, 2=unnatural) was analyzed using a moving window focal mean function. The resulting mean values were applied to the grid cell on which the window was centered. The window diameter was varied between 100m and 1000m in 100m increments, resulting in ten datasets, each with values ranging from 0 (completely unnatural) to 1 (completely natural). These ten datasets were then added to produce a grid with values ranging from 0 to 10.
