2009 Measures Summit

September 29 - October 1, 2009

Glen Cove, NY

This gathering of approximately 70 scientists, project directors, and senior managers from across the Conservancy evaluated our ability as an organization to assess the effectiveness of our strategies across a spectrum of the Conservancy’s most important projects and crosscutting focal areas (i.e., freshwater, marine, climate, protected areas).

We reviewed the progress we’re making in measures and monitoring efforts associated with 7 pilot measures projects launched two years ago. We also evaluated measures progress for a range of strategies associated with another 16 of the Conservancy’s highest priority projects.

The Conservation Measures Summit is part of a broader effort to improve our collective ability to evaluate the effectiveness of our conservation work at all levels of the organization, as outlined in the Conservation Measures Business PlanBe sure to visit the Conservation Gateway measures page for information, guidance, tools and publications on implementing measures.

Materials for Measures Summit Participants

(instructions for accessing the private pages)

  • FINAL AGENDA for the Measures Summit (9/23/09)
  • Plenary presentations (11/10/09)
  • Project narratives, ConProrecords, peer-reviews and presentation
  • UPDATED Peer Review Assignments (9/15/09) - [Changes to the peer review assignments are indicated in red font.]  We have pre-assigned Summit participants to prepare written peer reviews of 1-2 projects, and to specific oral peer review sessions at the Measures Summit.  This Excel workbook shows the assignments for each of the four peer review sessions (composed of 6 concurrent peer reviews). In making these assignments, we have attempted to expose participants to projects outside their region while to the extent possible linking individuals with specific expertise and interest (e.g., marine conservation) with projects that would benefit from that expertise.
  • Materials for facilitators and scribes (private)
  • Guidance for Preparing Written Peer Reviews - This document provides guidance on how to prepare the 2-3 page written peer reviews that are required of nearly all Summit participants.
  • Project Presentation Guidelines - This document provides specific guidelines for the 15 minute presentations that each project will make at the start of their peer review session. An additional Power Point providing guidance on presenting your theory of change is available here.
  • Strategy Effectiveness Measures Report Guidance - This guidance describes the written and electronic materials project teams must prepare to participate in the peer review sessions at the 2009 Measures Summit. All participants will find it useful to peruse this guidance as it describes the information that will be the basis of the written and oral peer reviews. Everyone attending the Summit will be expected to participate in peer review both prior to and during the Summit.
  • Conservation Measures Working Paper on monitoring investment
