The Nature Conservancy is working across all 50 U.S. states to develop a shared comprehensive geospatial database of Conservation Management Status Measures as well as records of protection and management activities taking place across the country. This information will not only better inform TNC and partners of current biodiversity conservation status, but can also assist natural resource owners and managers to identify opportunities to strengthen their protection and management capabilities on lands designated for that purpose. The purpose of this website is to provide materials that will be helpful in making that project a success.
The purpose of the United States Conservation Management Status Project (‘US CMS’) is to develop and apply a consistent and efficient approach to measuring the degree to which lands and waters have adequate intent, tenure, and management in place to protect biodiversity. The US CMS project has a primary goal is of supporting implementation of a first iteration of this Ecoregional Status Measure across the 50 U.S. states by the end of FY 07. Through this project, all 50 U.S. states will build a shared geospatial database of Conservation Management Status Measures that includes comprehensive records of biodiversity protection and management activities taking place across the country. This iteration will require review and refinement by the regions through FY 08. Reviewed products will be made available (with any restrictions that exist) to the broader conservation and resource management community.
This work will be based on existing protection and management data, as well as newly developed information on private lands and non-permanent conservation management actions. This effort emphasizes the use of existing public information from a variety of sources, including but not limited to the: Conservation Biology Institute’s Protected Areas Database (“CBI PAD”), GAP Analysis Program, TNC Conservation Lands System Database (CLS), and other existing databases. Working through a coordinated effort with TNC’s U.S. conservation regions and state programs, the project will incorporate new protection and management polygons and measures data where possible – focusing on the properties and fee-simple easements the organization holds, short-term protection and management activities it is involved with, and additional information made available in TNCs own regional and state databases. An emphasis will also be made to expand the marine and freshwater components of this data layer. The project will work with partners to ensure protection and management efforts are properly mapped and attributed according to national and international data standards.
