Virtual Freshwater Conference 2008-2009
December 18, 2008- May 14, 2009
Around the world, freshwater ecosystems are in decline. They have lost a greater proportion of their species and habitat than ecosystems on land or in the oceans. This decline is a direct result of human activities. We can and must do a better job. The freshwater efforts of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) now occur at all scales (local, regional and global) and in a wide variety of geographic and political settings around the world. This conference seeks to capture what we are learning through these efforts, the perspectives of key collaborators (e.g., the US Army Corps of Engineers, Caterpillar, etc.), and provide an opportunity for dialogue on salient topics.
The conference will be "virtual" - participants will be able to attend from wherever they are - and will consist of 29 sessions organized into four content streams or tracks (setting priorities & measuring progress, science & restoration, law & policy, and our stories - boundaries & scale) offered during ten 1.5 hour time blocks beginning December 18 and lasting through May 4 (one about every two weeks). Each session will have a specific online component (WebEx) to link with and a call-in number for the audio component. Some sessions are being recorded and can be viewed through the Files folder in the left hand navigation of this page
This format will save approximately 120 tonsof carbon and $200,000 from the collective budget centers of TNC alone.
