Floodplains support great biological productivity and diversity and are among the most valuable habitat types on Earth for the provision of ecosystem services to society. Floodplains are also among the most converted, degraded and threatened habitat types on the planet. Thus the conservation and restoration of floodplains is a top priority for many conservation organizations and resource agencies. This session will examine how conservation projects can achieve each of these three factors, discuss lessons that can be extended to other regions, and identify ongoing challenges that require a coordinated response. Speakers include Jeff Opperman (TNC) and Rip Sparks (NGRREC) - floodplain connectivity and its importance to freshwater ecosystem health, Catherine McCalvin (TNC) - Santa Clara River (CA, USA), Christian Marks (TNC) - Connecticut River (CT, USA), Mauricio De la Maza (WWF Mexico) â Rio Grande / Bravo (USA and Mexico).
