DESCRIPTION
Although many of the world's existing protected areas contain freshwater habitats, very few adequately protect rivers, lakes, wetlands and estuaries. Freshwater has been under-served in the world's protected areas because managers and planners are often unaware of their freshwater conservation opportunities, and they do not have easy access to appropriate guidance and tools to assist them. This session will provide an overview of the need for guidance and tools and efforts underway to help fill this gap. Speakers include Jonathan Higgins (TNC), Karin Krchnak (TNC) and Rebecca Tharme (TNC) - TNC's technical guidance and policy direction.
