DESCRIPTION
The water flowing through a freshwater ecosystem impacts not only associated freshwater habitats but also near shore marine habitats. In addition to flow, these habitats are particularly sensitive to changes in sediment, temperature and chemical regimes. The Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico is a stark reminder of this. This session will explore the role of healthy river flows in protecting downstream habitat and challenge us to be more integrated across our conservation efforts. Speakers include Rob Brumbaugh (TNC) - watershed threats to coastal and marine systems, Dave DeGues (TNC) - nitrogen reduction efforts within TNC's Upper Mississippi River Program, Patricia Tellez (TNC) - flow and sediment management in the Magdalena River (Colombia) for coastal reefs, and Amanda Wrona (TNC) - flow management for estuarine species on the Savannah River (Georgia, USA).
