River managers are increasingly aware that rivers disconnected from their floodplains results in negative impacts on riverine ecosystem health. Conservation easements and land acquisition are essential tools employed by TNC and its partners to address these issues by allowing rivers to access their historic floodplains, reducing ground water pumping adjacent to riparian areas, and allowing natural river processes to occur. This session explains how this important strategy in the context of freshwater conservation. Speakers include Eric Krueger (TNC) - using easements to allow floodplain connectivity on the Savannah River (GA, USA), Greg Golet (TNC) - using easements to allow floodplain connectivity on the Sacramento River (CA, USA), Jeanmarie Haney (TNC) - retiring agriculture to increase streamflow in the San Pedro River (AZ, USA), and Michael Schindel (TNC) - the role of conservation easements and floodplain connectivity in Oregon (OR, USA).
